From Zimbabwe, Ironwood is a dense and beautiful hardwood. The tribal carvers find trees downed by elephants, some several hundered years old, to use in this demanding type of sculpture. It takes time for the artists to haul back to thier village and carve the chunks of this very heavy wood. Most of the pieces you see are from a single piece of wood although a few of them use one piece for the animal and one for the base. They use tools normally used on stone carving and dentistry since the wood is so hard. These pieces have a rich beautiful look.
