Louis Stephen Gadal AWS bio

A native of California, born in 1936 and raised in the southern part of Los Angeles, LouisGadal developed a strong interest in drawing. He received a winning scholarship to the Chouinard Art Institute, in Los Angeles, from the Examiner Scholastic Sports Award Competition, while he was still in high school.

At Chouinard Art Institute, under a four year scholarship, he studied drawing with DonaldGraham, Herb Jopsen and Bernard Garbutt. He studied watercolor with Rex Brandt and Edward Reep, two noted California watercolorists.Following graduation, he spent the next fifteen years developing his drawing skills and exhibited nationally. He furthered his study in printmaking at Chouinard Art Institute,studying Lithography and Intaglio with printmaker Joe Funk of Tamarind Lithography Studio.

For the past twenty years he has maintained his own Architectural Illistration firm, where he has worked on such projects as the Corning Museum in New York, the Rockwell Museum and center for Western Art in Corning, New York, and locally, the Bunker Hill Project.

As his career developed, he became interested in watercolor painting, which then led him to producing many landscapes and seascapes, depicting the California area in a traditional manner. His subjects vary to include figures, portraits and western portrayals. His mediums of choice are watercolor, acrylic and egg tempera.

He is listed in "Who's Who in America", published in American Artist Magazine and published in the books, the "Best of Watercolor 2", "Light and Shadow", 1998, Rockport Publishers Gloucester, Massachusetts.

His teaching credits extend to include "California Institute of the Arts", in Valencia, Ca.and Parsons Art Institute in Los Angeles and art seminar demonstrating his painting abilities.He has an extensive list of exhibitions, both locally and nationally and his art is owned by corporations and private collectors as well as museums.

Louis is a signature member of the Niagra Frontier Watercolor Society, the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, National Watercolor Society (selected for the 1994 Traveling Exhibition), American Society of Marine Artists signature member and in 1992 his entry for the American Watercolor Society was selected for the AWS 126th Annual Traveling Exhibition. Again, in 1995 his painting was selected for the 128th Annual Traveling Exhibition and won the Dagmar TribbleAward. In 1996, he won the Gold Medal Award for the Best of Watercolor, San Dimas Western Art Show, and won first prize in the National Watercolor Society member show. He is a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Art Program. Louis continues to be an active participant in the art world.
